About
 Des
Chambers is a lecturer at the Department of Information Technology,
National University of Ireland, Galway. His main research
interests are in the areas of intelligent mobile devices and
distributed systems. He holds a Primary Degree in Electronic
Engineering from the University of Limerick, a Masters Degree
in Computer Systems Design from Trinity College Dublin and
a Ph.D. in Applied Computing from NUI, Galway.
 He is responsible
for the development and delivery of courses, for a range of
computer related disciplines including Networks and Data Communications,
Distributed Systems and Object-Oriented Programming. Prior
to taking up employment in the University he worked internationally
as a senior engineer in the Computer industry for a number
of years. During this time in industry he worked on a range
of both hardware and software design projects including the
design of a vector processor, development of a mainframe computer
system and the development of an advanced knowledge based
System Management software product called the System Healthcheck.
He has extensive knowledge and experience of technology areas
such as Distributed Computing, Network Programming Paradigms
and Object Oriented Technologies and he regularly provides
consultancy services to leading Computer and IT companies.
He is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Engineers of
Ireland.
Research Interests
Current research interests include the VLAB Project at NUI Galway, in
particular the development of the communications and messaging services that
will be used within this project. Other areas of research activity include
the development of remote medical monitoring and diagnostic devices and the
use of distributed agent architectures for financial services brokering.
Projects
Responsible for Work Package 5 in the VLAB Project. The goal is to develop
an enhanced Notification Service with support for events with XML content
and event filtering and correlation policies defined in XML. This service
will provide the basis for all inter-agent communication on the VLAB
project. The service could also potentially be used for any application that
requires asynchronous messaging based on a filtered XML content stream.
